About Dr. Edelstein
Dr. Edelstein has been practicing Family Medicine in Great Neck for 45 years, focusing on the care of patients from teen years to eighty, ninety and beyond. He has a great sense of pride in having taken care of many families through four generations, in addition to several centenarians.
Originally from Canada and a graduate of McGill University, Dr. Edelstein came to New York to serve as Chief of Emergency Physicians at St. Francis Hospital, then Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Misericordia Hospital in the Bronx, then Chief of Emergency Physicians at Plainview Hospital. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a recipient of an Executive Certificate in Healthcare Delivery Management from the Cornell-NYU Stern School of Business Management.
He is currently Vice-Chair of The Department of Family Medicine at NSUH Manhasset, a Senior Attending in The Department of Medicine, and a member of The Medical Board, having previously served as a President of the 3,000 doctor Medical Staff Society. Dr. Edelstein is a Clinical Assistant Professor and a member of the Department of Family Medicine Executive Committee at The Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, having had previous teaching appointments at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NYU, Cornell, UCLA and McGill University.
He also currently serves as President of the North Shore Physicians Organization and has served as a past President of the North Shore University Hospital Medical Staff IPA, a member of the New York Medical Staff Leadership Council, the Executive Committee of The New York Alliance of Physicians and Surgeons, both the State and Federal Legislation Committees of the Medical Society of the State of New York, as well as Chair of the Commission on Membership and Member Services of the NYS Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Edelstein has served on the Board of Directors of Oxford Health Plans NY and on the Physician Advisory Committee of United Healthcare Northeast Region. He was appointed by Governor Pataki and The State Legislature to the NYS Committee on Practice Guidelines and Medical Technology Assessment, then to the NYS Department of Health Managed Care Quality and Information Committee, and has also served as a Deputy Medical Examiner for Nassau County.
At North Shore he currently serves on the Executive Committee of The Department of Family Medicine, The System Chiefs and Chairs Committee and has previously served on The Department of Medicine Credentials Committee, the Quality Assurance Committee, the Patient Safety Committee, the Bylaws Committee, the Osteoporosis Task Force, the Pay-for-Performance Task Force, the Medical Ethics Committee, the System-wide Geriatrics and Longevity Steering Committee, the Physicians Health Committee, the Performance Improvement Group, the Healthport Physicians Editorial Board, the Medical Executive Council of the System, Secretary of the Medical Board, Chair of the Credentials Committee, as well as Co-Chair of the Medical Staff Affairs Committee.
Dr. Edelstein is a Patron of the Osler Library of McGill University, a member of the Osler Club of London, Founder of the Osler Society of New York, a member of The Advisory Board of The Osler Society of The Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, London, U.K. He has been an Advisory Editor to "Primary Care and Cancer," as well as a manuscript reviewer for a number of publications, including the medical journal "Family Practice Management" published by the American Board of Family Practice, Prof. Michael Bliss' book "Harvey Cushing: a Life in Surgery" published by Oxford University Press, as well as 2 other books on health published by Penguin Putnam.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Edelstein has also served as a consultant and advisor to numerous organizations in both the public and private domain, including The Coca Cola Bottling Company, North American Technologies, The Long Island Savings Bank, Norstan Apparel Shops, the Raytheon Corporation, National Medical Health Card, Hunter Business School, Leviton Manufacturing and more local groups including the Village of Garden City, the Great Neck Park District and The Vigilant Hook and Ladder Company.
Dr. Edelstein received a Hartford Foundation Scholarship in Geriatrics in 2001, and has been named one of the "Best Doctors in New York" by New York Magazine, one of the "Outstanding Physicians" in the United States by Town and Country Magazine and one of the top 55 Family Physicians in the United States by the Ladies' Home Journal. Other recognitions have included top doctor designations by Castle Connelly, Newsday, the Center for the Study of Services, the Consumers Research Council of America, and The Albert Nelson Marquis "Who's Who in America" Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2017, along with Dr. David Battinelli, The Physician-In-Chief of Northwell Health, Dr. Edelstein, was one of the two Honorees of the "Art of Medicine" Annual Gala of Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.
In 2019, Dr. Edelstein was one of the speakers at The American Osler Society's Centennial Celebration of Sir William Osler's passing. His presentation was entitled "Willie O. And Willie S." (Sir William Osler, The World's Greatest Physician and William Shakespeare, The World's Greatest Playwright & Poet, Their Similarities And Their Differences.)
In 2020, North Shore University Hospital established "The Dr. Martin Edelstein Lectureship in Medicine", an annual lecture series which continues in perpetuity, as a part of Medical Grand Rounds of The Northwell Health System.
And when not attending to these various responsibilities, Dr. Edelstein has enjoyed spending time with his wife Judy, their four sons and daughters-in-law and 11 grandchildren. The Edelsteins enjoy classical theatre, collecting antiques and have been patrons of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, U.K., patrons of the Joyce Center in Dublin, Ireland, and here in New York, supporters of the Classical Stage Company, Theatre for a New Audience, the Drama League, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, as well as members of the National Arts Club.

Insurances Accepted
Dr. Edelstein participates in Medicare, certain Blue Cross plans, Northwell Health and affiliated plans, MagnaCare, as well as certain United Healthcare plans. It is best to call the office to inquire about the details of various insurances.
In addition, in the year 2000, Dr. Edelstein established a hybrid Concierge Care affiliation which continues to the present and is subscribed to by many of his patients.
